As a pup.
*We provided his family with some teaching help, and they have decided to work with these two!*
Name: Beau
Breed: Maremma cross
Age: 18 months
DOB: June 2023
Neutered
Purchased from : Adopted him in a private transaction
Location: Uxbridge, Ontario
Secure fencing of at least 5 feet. Be prepared to add on if necessary.
Reason for Rehoming: Inadequate property and resources to keep safe and train into a working LGD
He can be adopted separately. He is well-bonded to his brother.
Beau is very affectionate and sweet natured and healthy. Very friendly with all people, eager to get a belly rub from whomever he can. He was raised exclusively outdoors on a farm/rural setting, but lacks the full training and development to to date to do his job well. He is not aggressive with people in any way.
He is very vocal with unfamiliar sounds until they are determined to not be a threat. He currently sleeps in a stall in our barn, quite happily and quietly with his brother. Our barn also houses Alpacas and Ducks, which he is comfortable with. He can be off leash in our fenced pasture and is socialized well with the Alpacas. He's not too bothered by the barn cats, but they generally keep their distance. He needs further training around chickens - he is keen to chase them and "play" with them, so he is kept well-separated from the birds. Some positive teaching will settle this down
He is not one for escaping, but will follow his brother out if they find an option, and when out, needs work on recall. He is ok with basic commands, happy to sit for a treat, but strong recall is still a work in progress.
He has not spent any time indoors, but may be suitable as a house pet given his overly affectionate nature. He is very vocal in new surroundings, when on his own out in the yard. He will generally sit quietly when we are a presence in the yard. When guests come on the property he is quite vocal, but quickly keen to get pets and rubs when established that they are not a threat.
He does well with children and teenagers. We have not seen any aggression from Beau whatsoever towards people apart from his loud bark. He does walk on a harness although doesn't really "get it". He is a little nervous in the car, but quiet, although he does pant in the car. He would do well with the Trust Technique and positive-reinforcement training through Recallers or Home School the Dog.
He does not show food protection behaviour. He will really benefit from people with LGD experience who can continue to develop him for that job and have fencing of at least 5 feet, and be prepared to add on if necessary. Or, someone who wants a very big cuddly dog in the house.
We do recommend the online teaching program adoption application.
Adoption contribution: $400
