As a pup.
*We are delighted that, after providing his family with help in training, they have decided to work with this boy.*
Name: Luc
Breed: Maremma x Pyr
Age: 18 months
DOB: June 2023
Neutered
Purchased from : We adopted him in a private transaction
Location: Uxbridge, Ontario
Secure fencing of at least 5 feet required. Be prepared to add on if necessary.
Reason for Rehoming: Inadequate property and resources to keep safe and train into a working LGD.
He can be adopted separately. He is well bonded to his brother.
Luc is affectionate and mostly very sweet natured. Friendly wiith all people whom he has established as not a threat, and eager to get pets and affection. He was raised exclusively outdoors on a farm/rural setting, but lacks the full training and development to-date to do his job well. He is very vocal with unfamiliar sounds until they are determined to not be a threat. He currently sleeps in a stall in our barn, quite happily and quietly with his brother.
Our barn also houses Alpacas and Ducks, which he is comfortable with. He cannot be off leash in our fenced pasture as yet - he will find a way to escape. He is socialized with Alpacas. He's not too bothered by the barn cats, but they generally keep their distance. He needs further training around chickens - he is keen to chase them and "play" with them, so he is kept well separated from the birds.
He is one for escaping, and when out, needs work on recall. He is ok with basic commands, happy to sit for a treat, but strong recall is still a work in progress.
He has not spent any time indoors, but may be suitable as a house pet given his affectionate nature. He is very vocal in new surroundings, when on his own out in the yard. He will generally sit quietly when we are a presence in the yard. When guests come on the property he is quite vocal, but happy to get pets when no threat is sensed.
He has on a few occasions growled at people reaching quickly over the fence to pet him that he doesn't know too well and on one occasion put his mouth on someone's hand, but without incident i.e. was not with intent to hurt he was letting the person know he didn’t like this behaviour from them. He does well with children and teenagers. He does walk on a harness although still needs some work.
He is a little nervous in the car, but quiet, although he does pant in the car. James French’ Trust Technique would do wonders for him. He does show food protection behaviour around his brother and needs to be separated when fed. Dogs should not need to share their food.
He will really benefit from people with LGD experience who can continue to develop him for that job and larger acreage with at least 5 foot fencing. 6 foot is preferred.
He may be a good house dog since he can be quite affectionate.
We do recommend the online teaching program adoption application.
Adoption contribution: $400
