Bear prefers the bed to the scary floor!

September 2010 - January 5, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we let you know Zephyr (previously Bear) passed on this morning at the age of 13.5 years old. I adopted Zephyr from you back in 2011. That was the day I met my best friend. He’s been my constant companion and adventure buddy. He‘s been an amazing older brother to our three young kids, a great protector to our goats, chickens and other pets. He’s spent his summers swimming in the Atlantic, and his winters barking at coyotes, and snuggling up with his people on the couch. He was the best dog I ever had, and he will be missed so much. He was so very loved. Thank you for bringing him into our lives. We are all better for it.

His story:

Bear is a cross, of some sort (golden retriever or lab, perhaps). He was originally supposed to have come into care in July, 2011 but his owners changed their minds. They contacted us again in October for assistance. Bear is a sweet, loving dog, but has not been trained and was too excitable around the children. He lived outside his whole life, and is quite frightened by stairs and flooring. At 70lbs, he is a small boy but has the double dew claws and looks very Pyr-like. He is an absolute Teddy Bear!

Born in September 2010, he is a young boy with a long life ahead of him. He has been extremely frightened by all the changes he has gone through, and needs some attention and encouragement. However, in his first 24-hours of care, he started to come around right away for cookies and cuddles. He will be an amazing dog for one lucky family. In fact, friends of Maryanne Pearce saw her photos and updates on Facebook upon his arrival into care and fell in love. Originally planning on adopting a Pyr for December, they are now going to adopt Bear right away! So, Bear will be going directly from “adoption” to “happy tails”. Congratulations!

The SOGPC Rescue Team would like to thank Rollie’s new mom for advising us of his plight, and for arranging for her daughter (another Pyr owner) to bring him to meet Maryanne Pearce. And also to Chrystal for driving him to and from Dr. Graham’s for neutering and veterinary care. Dr. Graham and her office staff do an amazing amount of work to help all of these Pyrs in need.

Condolences
by: Sonja

My deepest condolences to your family. I drove Zephyr from northern Ontario to the Ottawa valley when he was first taken into rescue and I remember our trip quite fondly. He was such a good, but very nervous boy. I am so glad that he found a loving home and lead such a long and fulfilling life.

John's daughter called us one day to come and pick up a puppy she had found on the side of the road. She was headed into St Louis, Mo from our small town of Beaufort, Mo.

She was about 6 months old at the time. We knew she was going to be a large dog because of the size of her feet! We brought her home, took her to the vet, he took one look at her and said she is a Great Pyrenees/lab mix.

She is a wonderful pet. She is a very active girl, loves my 4 grandsons and will run and chase them all around the yard. She is very good on a lease and doesn't react to the other dogs when out walking.

We took her camping for the first time this past weekend. She is now 4. She was so good. She didn't even bark one time. One little girl about 3-4 walked past our campsite with her dad and said "Daddy, look, a Snowbear." My grandsons have always called her a big gentle polar bear, so we all thought that was very amusing.

She does have a very active voice if left outside at night and is leary of strangers, but family and friends, she is VERY lovable, and will let you know that she is NOT content for you to stop petting her.

She is a GREAT dog and I would get a full Pyrenees if the opportunity presented itself.

Zephyr / Bear
by: Maryanne Pearce

Hi, well, he sure does look like a Pyr, but we were assured by his first owners he was a mix. He has double dew claws, but he is only 60 lbs. He is just a doll though. I am so glad for Melody, Alex and Zephyr!

Zephyr

Zephyr is doing so well in his new home!! He sleeps with us every night and is so good with everyone, children, cats, other dogs, he's so gentle! He loves to play outside at the park with us and when he's in the house he wants nothing more than just to cuddle :)

Smart fella too! Already has learned so many commands!! He won't need obedience school. Thank you so much for my puppy! I love him with all my heart!

Happy for Bear's adoption.
by: Connie Ramey

That is wonderful news about Bear...it always makes me happy to hear of a good dog finding a good home. Are you sure he's a cross?..he sure looks like a pure Pyr from his pictures...and double dews to boot.
