Behaviour Issue

by Trena

Why would a 2yr old go along great with the 3 other small dogs and then suddenly get very aggressive with them? I have had him since he was 4months old and now twice he has gotten very aggressive with them, never bite but sounds like it.

Aggression

Are they all males? This could be the issue since Pyrs don't always get along with their own sex even if it is another breed. This will turn up as they mature.

Make sure he is neutered.

Are you sure he isn't playing?

I would suggest bringing in a positive-reinforcement trainer to evaluation the situation and make recommendations.

play
by: Anonymous

You can compare human teen males wrestling...there's lots of noise and shouting and testing of strength and bodies flying about.
Dogs at play are not so different. Most of the racket is merely posture.
Are your dogs all neutered? If not, they should be. At 2 yrs of age, your Pyr may be tiring of the constant attention of all the small dogs, and is telling them to back off. They may not be listening, so you can help out by removing them from his space. Small dogs can be persistent. They need to respect your Pyr as he is not a puppy anymore. Adult Pyrs can sometimes be quite aloof and to prefer some 'space'.
You might try shorter playtimes, keeping the small dogs separate from the Pyr the rest of the time. Let your Pyr decide when he wants to spend time with his little brothers and when he does not, respect his decision. If you are having trouble identifying intensity, confer with a positive re-enforcement trainer that has experience with the Pyrenees breed, in you area. Good luck.

All the small dogs are 6yrs to 10 yrs old they really don’t play or bother the pry, they stay inside most of the time and he comes in and out when he wants. I’ve noticed his eyes will dilate really big when he’s about to get aggressive, could there be something I need to have a vet check?

my big white boy
by: Anonymous

my pyrenees is 3 years old and has just started showing aggression to non neutered male dogs,
aside from that and all the hair he is a wonderful boy,
i walk him on 92 acres, he loves the swamp and runs after coy-dogs, catches ducks and loves to drag deer bones from the bushes,
A wonderful companion , stubborn but truly loyal,
he has 2 havanese brothers, he guards and loves, cries to when he sees them after being away,
happy to have the big hairball,
from burlington, ontario
